A Mother’s Quest for Truth Leads to an Alliance with Her Daughter’s Killer in ‘Without Sin’

What if everything you believed about the biggest tragedy of your life was suddenly thrown in doubt? In the gripping four-part psychological thriller Without Sin, viewers will be thrust into the tumultuous world of Stella Tomlinson, portrayed by the talented BAFTA winner Vicky McClure. As a mother shattered by her daughter’s murder, Stella is drawn into a web of mystery and deception when she meets Charles Stone (BAFTA nominee Johnny Harris), the man convicted of murdering her daughter.

With another teen’s life in peril, the unlikely duo is forced to work together in a desperate bid to uncover the true events of that fateful night. What begins as a quest for closure quickly spirals into a complex web of truth and lies, making Stella question everything she thought she knew about that night.

As Stella delves deeper into the investigation, she begins to question not just Charles’s guilt, but the very foundation of her beliefs about her daughter’s murder. Without Sin takes viewers on a rollercoaster of suspense and raw emotion, leaving audiences pondering the thin line between villain and victim, and the lengths one will go in search of redemption.

On how the series was conceptualized, writer and creator Frances Poletti told LeftLion, “Vicky [McClure] was looking for a project to do back in Nottingham, and she’d watched a Channel 4 documentary about restorative justice and thought there was something really interesting in that. She wanted to dive into the question of what would happen if a mother went to meet the man she believed had killed her child, hoping for an apology, and then he flipped the meeting on its head. So I met with Vicky about the idea, and once I left the room it was all I could think about. Johnny Harris and Vicky have been good mates since the This Is England days, and they wanted to work together again, so I teamed up with them to develop a story.”

In an interview with Big Issue, Vicky McClure spoke about her character saying, “This show used to be called Redemption. And that word is very important. It runs through the heart of the series. Because they both need that. Stella has absolutely nothing to lose. No matter what she finds out, it’s not going to bring her little girl back. At the moment she has very little purpose. Everything’s crumbled around her. So if, all of a sudden, there is a possibility of more answers, she wants to know what those answers are, as painful as it will be.”

Buckle up and prepare for a wild ride as the gripping whodunit, ‘Without Sin’ is set to stream exclusively on Lionsgate Play this November 15.
